Project description

Noncovalent interactions, such as hydrogen, halogen, chalcogen, pnictogen, tetrel and triel bonding, as well as π-π stacking, cation-π and anion-π interactions, in spite of being weak and not always well recognized, possess significant, although still undervalued, synthetic potential due to their numerosity and all-embracing nature. For example, the concept of designing metal complex catalysts with noncovalent bond donor or acceptor sites has emerged as a promising strategy for developing selective catalytic transformations. The ambition of this Project is to rationally apply these weak interactions (and in particular halogen, chalcogen, pnictogen and tetrel bonds) in catalysis and in the synthesis of new types of organic and coordination compounds, with significance namely in medicinal and materials sciences. The work will have also the collaboration of Prof. M.F.C. Guedes da Silva.
