Abstract The work presents a study of surface-pressure-area isotherms, obtained by compression-expansion cycles, and of surface pressure-time dependencies of C-60 films at the air/water interface under the first and subsequent compression. The first compression-expansion cycle of a C-60 multilayer affords the irreversible decrease of the area per molecule which can be explained by the pressure-induced transformation in the film. The kinetics of compression induced surface pressure relaxation in a C-60 film has been investigated in the range 10-30 degrees C. These data show that a change in the relaxation mechanism occurs under initial compression, and enables the kinetic parameters associated with at least two relaxation processes to be derived.
