Abstract This work is focused on the recent advances, mainly achieved during the past ten years, on the recovery of silver using solvent extraction. Within the general purposes usually associated with the use of solvent extraction, research on the selective recovery of this valuable element from aqueous solutions is particularly emphasized, as it can be useful for potential hydrometallurgical applications. In addition, work devoted to a better comprehension of extraction reactions in given systems is also a value adding, deserving a special mention in this review. The information provided is systematically classified according to the general structural type of the extractants involved, the type or types of atoms in the extractants directly responsible for metal extraction being, whenever possible, highlighted.
