Abstract A vanadium(V) dimer [\VO2(py)(2)\(2)(mu-C2O4)] 1, has been isolated from a solution of [VO(sal-Phe)(H2O)] 2 (sal-Phe = N-salicylidene-L-phenylalaninate) in H2O/pyridine. Its crystal and molecular structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis, the oxalate acting as a symmetrical bis(chelating) bridge. Possible mechanisms for the formation of oxalate are briefly discussed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
