CQE researchers participated in the 2026 edition of Laboratórios Abertos do DEQ, held from 27 April to 4 May at Instituto Superior Técnico, which received more than 800 secondary‑school students accompanied by approximately 50 teachers.
The event, organised by Dulce Simão, Marta Abrantes and Carmen Bacariza in collaboration with NEQIST, involved faculty members, researchers, administrative staff and about 50 students from Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering.
Among the invited speakers who presented research and industrial activities in chemical engineering or related areas to secondary‑school students, Rute Cesário presented her work on “Amostragem e Perspetivas Isotópicas na Biogeoquímica do Mercúrio”, Daniel Costa challenged the students with the question “Inteligência Artificial na Química: A única solução ou o pior inimigo?”, and Pedro Paulo Santos delivered an engaging talk on “Selfies, quiralidade e Química Orgânica”. In addition, several activities were supported by CQE members, including Vânia André (“O mundo dos cristais: viagem microscópica pelas estruturas que transformam o mundo”), Ana Paula Serro and Diana Silva (“BioMatch: do natural ao biomédico”), Pedro Mendes (“Extracção Líquido Líquido”, “Secagem em Filtro Prensa de Membranas”, “Tratamento de Efluentes por Ultrafiltração e Osmose Inversa”, “Jar-test no Tratamento de Águas”), and finally Carmen Bacariza and Karina Shimizu (“Catalisadores ao serviço do ambiente”).
