The European Innovation Council (EIC) concluded the 2023 funding cycle by choosing 42 startups and SMEs from a pool of 1083 contestants, amounting to a total of €285M in combined grants and equity investments.

Delox presented their solution, Delox Air, as an answer to the “Aerosol and Surface Decontamination for Pandemic Management” Challenge, and after a compelling pitch and a Q&A session with the EIC committee, they were awarded this outstanding recognition. Among the 42 inalists, Delox is the only Portuguese company that was able to secure funding, making it an important milestone for the startup. This invaluable recognition will allow Delox to expand their technology and business.

In the words of Fernando Antunes, Delox CTO: “This project represents another validation of the unique value of Delox technology. It will enable Delox to expand its lines of products and develop Delox Air – the solution that was selected by the EIC to enable social interaction for future pandemics. On a personal note, Delox exemplifies how curiosity-driven research and technology-driven innovation can converge, blurring the traditional boundaries between pure and applied research." New results from collaboration with PJhttp://cqe.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/news/new-results-from-collaboration-with-pjThu, 15 Feb 24 00:00:00 +0000
Instituto Superior Técnico participated in the investigation by the Judiciary Police (PJ) that led to the detection of a new synthetic drug, N-desethyl-isotonitazene, following a seizure of thousands of fake oxycodone tablets, as announced by the security force on February 6th. To identify this substance, the PJ's Scientific Police Laboratory (LPC) counted on the collaboration of Alexandra Antunes.

According to Alexandra, “the identification of this new synthetic drug is extremely important”, since “without its identification, the forensic authorities cannot control it and, when overdose cases arrive at the hospital, it is not possible to identify the agent cause, creating difficulties in treatment.” The toxicity of the substance is highlighted by PJ – “its consumption evokes feelings of euphoria followed by drowsiness, causing blockage of the respiratory system, which is the main cause of death from overdose”.

“My task was to analyze and characterize this new substance using high-resolution mass spectrometry, both in mixtures obtained by extraction from tablets and after isolation”, explains Alexandra Antunes. This work was developed in the mass spectrometry laboratory at CQE, together with researchers from FCUL, that collaborated with PJ. “It’s a very enriching work that fills me with pride”, says the researcher. “It is a clear example of collaboration between public institutions, where there is a common effort and technical means to solve concrete problems in society”, she adds.

Alexandra Antunes has worked with the LPC since 2017, having in 2020 been appointed by a judicial authority as an expert in the PJ's National Counter-Terrorism Unit.

In the field of ‘New Psychoactive Substances’, several scientific publications have already been made, and Técnico master’s theses have been developed in collaboration with the LPC.

The paper deals with mixed valence radical anions of bis(dioxaborines) with aromatic bridges that were studied by analytical techniques (Vis/NIR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry) and theoretical calculations. In the radical anions with three aromatic rings on the bridge, solvents are able to change the localization of the charge.

Cover Story: Some boron compounds are atropisomers, which may have different properties according to their rotation. Axial chirality has been found in certain borazines, azaborines, NHC-boranes, aminoarylboranes, and even nonbiaryl compounds doped with boron. Since many boron compounds have interesting pharmaceutical, optical, and electronic properties, the methods to isolate their rotamers, or even to produce them pure by asymmetric synthesis, have become an important research target. This topic was reviewed by the authors.

Recently, she published an article in Astrobiology in which a new hypothesis on prebiological enantiomeric was proposed. Based on this she was contacted by Aubrey Zerkle to give an interview to SAGANet (a network for astrobiologists and astrobiology-enthusiasts). This interview is connected with the site of the very prestigious Blue Marble Space Institute of Science. João Canário on "As palavras do mundo"http://cqe.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/news/joo-canrio-on-as-palavras-do-mundoWed, 12 Jul 23 00:00:00 +0100
João Canário and his team were interviewed for the program "As Palavras do Mundo" on the 6th of June. This is a TV show by the journalist Ana Daniela Soares, and the bibliophile Alberto Manguel, produced by Farol de Ideias, for RTP.

Starting from a careful selection of reference works and interviews with specialists from different scientific areas, the program offers a perspective of the current world, with each episode featuring a book on environmental themes. The journalist discusses with Alberto Manguel what might have motivated the author to write the book. Then, the journalist interviews an expert who assesses our relationship with the planet, in relation to the specific topic.

One of the next programs is about the book "Arctic Dreams", by Barry Lopes, which introduces the mysteries of the Arctic and the lives that surround it - animals and humans. And who better to talk about this topic than our colleague João Canário? This program, which will be broadcasted in two episodes (15 and 22 of July), addresses how the Arctic influences our planet and discusses its problems.

New episodes are published on Saturdays on RTP3, with reruns on various channels in the RTP universe.
