These are the confirmed keynote speakers for our meeting.

Professor Jose Luis Capelo-Martinez

Talk title: Biochemdicine: A new concept for the XXI century

Dr. José Luís Capelo Martínez is an Associate Professor with habilitation at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where he co-leads the bio-analytics and proteomics lab "BIOSCOPE", together with Dr. Carlos Lodeiro Espiño.His research interests are focused on analytical proteomics, ultrasounds, nanosynthesis, fluorescent chemosensors and smart materials, with a strong use of high-resolution TOF mass spectrometry techniques. Since 2010 the groups has published more that 200 papers, has edited over 20 special journal issues, and has organized over 15 international conferences.

Dr. Capelo Martínez research is aimed at the expansion of the analytical approaches available for biological, chemical and medical applications, and he will be presenting the KNL for the CQE thematic line MEDLIFE entitled "Biochemdicine: a new tool for analytical biochemists, bioinformatics and physicians"

 

Professor Tiago Domingos

Talk title: Understanding the relation between energy and economic growth: the key to sustainable development

Tiago Domingos is an Associate Professor at the IST of the University of Lisbon and currently the President of Marine, Environment & Technology Center (MARETEC). He received his PhD in Environmental Engineering from IST in 2001. He has supervised or co-supervised several post-doc researchers, PhD and MSc students, in, among other areas, Environmental Engineering, Sustainable Energy Systems and Economics. Dr. Domingos research aims at creating a theoretical, mathematical basis for sustainability, integrating contributions from Ecology, Thermodynamics and Economics, and applying this to multiple case studies. He has published more than one hundred technical publications in national and international journals.

He will be presenting the KNL for the CQE Thematic Line SUSCHEM and the title is “Understanding the relation between energy and economic growth: the key to sustainable development”.

 

 

Professor Paulo Ferreira

International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory

Talk Title: Understanding Nanoparticles by Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy

Paulo Ferreira is currently the Head of Department of Advanced Electron Microscopy,Imaging and Spectroscopy at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), Portugal. He is also a Full Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IST, University of Lisbon, Portugal and an Adjunct Professor, Robert & Jane Mitchell Endowed Faculty Fellowship in Engineering in the Materials Science and Engineering Program at the University of Texas at Austin, USA.

Before joining INL and IST in Portugal, he was Robert & Jane Mitchell Endowed Faculty Fellowship in Engineering and Full Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, USA and the Director of Electron Microscopy at the Texas Materials Institute at the University of Texas at Austin. He has a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Illinois, USA and has done his Post-doctoral work at MIT in Materials Science and Engineering. He concentrates his scientific research in the areas of Nanomaterials, Nanotechnology and Electron Microscopy applied to Alternative Energy Technologies. At the educational level, he teaches graduate courses in Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology, Structure and Electron Microscopy. In parallel, he has been involved in initiatives with various American and Portuguese institutions in the areas of Education and Higher Education, Systems of Innovation, and Science and Technology.

He is a co-author of three books, namely “Materials 2000”, IST Press and “Investing in the Future: University-Industry Collaborations in USA and Portugal”. He is also the author of more than 170 scientific articles published in international journals and conference proceedings. Prof. Ferreira has also acted as a special advisor to the Minister of Economics and Innovation, Portugal, on Government Strategy for Science&Technology.
